Mugho Pine
This is a mugho pine I picked up at a nursery this morning. I went there for some cut paste and had to take this -- it was only $15! The trunk base is a little over 3". It doesn't have much (any) growth close to the trunk, but does have a couple of buds popping off of old growth and in the nooks and crannys, so there is hope. At the very least I could get a nice bunjin -- or air layer and still have an impressive-sized potensai. what do you guys (and gals) think? Photos are a lil blurry, my battery pack died.

This tree reminds me of a mugo pine that I bought from and nursery. Mine was probably double the size in growth. I have actually posted a picture of it in my gallery if you want to see what it looks like. The photo isn't the best but the tree is coming along well since I have taken that photo. So there is a lot of hope for this tree. I would love to have a go at another one again. I find they very rewarding and resposive to bonsai treatment. David |

thanks for the kind words STP, Clay, David,
David, your mugho is nice, do the needles reduce in size much? The ones on this one are quite lengthy. My only problem with this one is that I would like to get it out of this ten-gallon container to inspect the roots and maybe replace some of the soil, but it weighs around 100 lbs. I just hope the roots will be fine until spring. I should really get started on building that cold shelter seeing that it is snowing right now. regards, freakwent |

The needles do reduce in size with pinching. Treat in the same way as other pines.
When I got the nursery stock it was in a heshin bag and I was able to remove the tree and repot into a large grow box. I didn't touch the roots that first repot. I worked on the tree one or two months later in the growing season. I find they are quite responsive to training. and pinch. The only negative so far I have found is that sometimes branches just go brown and die for no reason. I haven't figured that one out yet. David |

aaahhh,
that is a nice one. I like how the needles on each branch seem to be pointing upward in a direction that flows with the movement of the trunkline. Last edited by freakwent : 24-Nov-2002 at 11:38 PM. |
