I think that you made a great improvement by the restyle. I love this tree !! I agree with Matt :

create the impression that the trunk is following a twisting, but somehow logical path to the apex, I think it would improve the tree.

I think the trunk is bending down and then up (can't see clearly so I might be wrong..) and it would be a shame to hide this movement behind foliage. I made a quick virtual to show what I mean.

Rene, your idea is also very good, but you don´t know the 3rd dimension of the tree. - You can see the movement of the trunk if you stand in front of the tree ......
Let me know, when you´ll come to me to Austria! ;-)
