..... so i styled the tree this spring with another front side.
Pinus mugo, 70cm tall, more than 200 years old, pot: Horst Heinzlreiter. What do you say? ![]() |

Re: MOUNTAIN PINE: what else ....... ;-)
What a great improvement! Have you found the deadwood on these old pines to be resistant to decay? The silhouette and general styling is inspired.
1) On the inclination of the trunk. It may just be the camera angle, but it appears that the top is farther than the base, giving a kind of tilting backward effect. Changing the planting angle to bring the apex forward just a little could help. 2) On the trunkline. the trunkline becomes a little difficult to follow because the origin of the branches isn't visible in this photo, but there are some windows through the foliage into areas that show some confusing arrangements that look (again in the photo appear) to be whorls or bar branches. If it were possible to cover some of these areas and at the same time create the impression that the trunk is following a twisting, but somehow logical path to the apex, I think it would improve the tree. The truth is, I'm not sure exactly where it does trace. This is strange because in your first restyling it seems so obvious. Maybe it's just a trick of the dark background? Regards, Matt Quote:

Re: MOUNTAIN PINE: what else ....... ;-)
Oh, I see you have turned the tree almost exactly 90 degrees clockwise, as seen from the top.
If that gorgeous hooked curve traveling up and down and up again is the trunkline, we must see the extremes of the movement. Especially the first apex. Those curves are too good to hide with branches.

Re: MOUNTAIN PINE: what else ....... ;-)
Way to go Wolfgang, very very NICE!
Now that is the direction I would like to take my bonsai efforts. Collecting mature wild specimens that can attain impressive stature in 5 years, not 50. I have already used up 50 years not doing bonsai. I doubt I'll get another. Does anyone know where I can find more info on doing the kind of thing that Wolfgang has shown us here? I am also curious about how he knows the tree is 200 years old. Growth rings, size, educated guess, what? Once again, very nice Wolfgang...........Mike |

Thanks for your compliments, Mike!
"...... how to work with (old) yamadoris ......": books: BONSAI FROM THE WILD from Nic Lenz or some books from Pius Notter (Switzerland) internet: look to Andy Rudledge´ BONSAI ENTHUSIAST http://www.bonsaienthusiast.com/ => I wrote an article about collecting yamadori. - Andy´s new site will start in January ...... |
