Theres not a whole lot you can do with those. I have one and I just prune it back by cutting the tips off in late winter or spring if you live in a cold climate. They are like jades in that you really can't wire them to speak of. I find them charming (do men use that word?) to have around.

Peace
Bob

aralia

The Aralia is such a great plant/tree to work with.

My personal choice is the one that is refered to as the Parsley Aralia.

It has finer foliage than the Ming.

Here is a pic of one soon to be potted.

Hmmmm!
Ok, heres go the foot!
Thats a nice houseplant, but....
I've never really considered these "Bonsai Material", why? Because you can't really STYLE them into a convincing bonsai. You can keep cutting them back and chopping off shorter and shorter to make an "Accompanyment plant" but not a styled bonsai. At best they are a potted plant that happens to be in a bonsai pot.
Does anyone have a pic of one actually wired or trimmed into a STYLE of some sort? I'd like to see one with some years of styling behind it.
I'd do some Googling but I'm SURE someone will spend some time so they can show me a bonsai.
This leads me to a question for ya all to kick around.....
Is a "plant" a bonsai, or bonsai material, if it can't be STYLED into something resembling a mature tree dwarfed in nature ( or appearing to be a mature dwarfed old tree even if it isn't) ?
Where is Will when we really need him?
Regards,
Dale

P.S. My recommendation..cut it off real short on trunk, it will pop out. Keep real short and picked at in a small pot to display with a larger bonsai, like a "grass" plant. The parts you cut off, stick them back in a pot and grow for your home . You CAN NOT learn bonsai by growing this as a bonsai! IMO

I think it would look nice planted in something like the one on the right:

Best regards,
Carl

20 years ago people said that ficus were no good for bonsai.
