Got some OK taper going and then it just goes up. Looks like it needs a chop about 1/2 the way up the trunk. I think I see a couple of branches there that could be selected from to be the new leader. This would also cause some new branches to pop out to select from.

I agree with Idaho - the Walter Pall adage of making the smallest tree possible is a good one in many instances.

Remember that when severely chopping Maples do it when the sap is not flowing. Maples have a nasty tendency to die back when pruned hard when the sap is flowing.

Third vote for a chop

The tree needs to be shortened, but since it is budding and too late for a chop, why not try an air layer? You might as well get something from the nine years of growth, and a second tree would be a nice dividend. You have nothing to lose by trying, and acers are ridiculously easy to layer. The base of the tree looks pretty good.

May I ask WHY you are planning on defoliating this tree? Do you consider it finished and ready to show or display?

Personally I do not see it as being so, but was wondering if you did.

For ramification I would suggest just trimming back to two leaves on each branch.

I also would not give up on this tree so quickly. You just never know what will pop out at you one day, especially with some strategic and/or drastic pruning.

I agree with Idaho as trimming back will help to add some taper to your branches. Although you might want to wait till spring to do this.
