Maple Health Issues

Here is a tree that has been intrusted to me for health issues. It became very weak this summer and has really lost its vigor.
I have defoliated it for two reasons. First to stop transpiration and give the roots a rest. Second, because the new buds look like they are going to do a fall push no matter what, and I wanted to treat the tree with Sevin before the buds break.

If this tree survives the winter it will be repotted into new soil in the spring, health permitting.

Rips,

What was it that you were going to treat the tree with? And what are the causes of the poor health? This looks like a nice tree. It would be a shame to loose it!

I would never defoliate a weak tree!

Leaves make food. No leaves: no food! Worse yet the tree has to dip into its reserves to re-leaf, and if it's already weak, it probably has no reserves to speak of.

The tree won't break buds if it doesn't have the root power to push them, so don't worry about that part of the equation.

In the future, if you want to slow transpiration, give it a shot of Cloud Cover or "Anti-stress 2000"

Regards,

Matt

I couldn't agree with you more. Here is the problem: I suspect that this maple has a mite that consumes chlorophyl. This little critter resides on the bud and atacks the leaf as it expands. So I defoliate to allow the Sevin to get to the buds and this way I am hoping for a crop of healthy leaves. I will keep this tree posted what ever the outcome.

Thanks Matt
