Nice tree Rob. The tree is a trident but has unattractive leaves for a trident. See what you can do with it in the future.

Nice tree. If it is a trident the leaves do need some help. I've lent my maple ID book to a friend, so I can't check, but I'm quite positive there are several different 3 lobed maple species. possibly it's one of those. Someone here will have some input I'm sure.

Alicia, you may be right.....but I'm not sure.

The other day in a bookstore I looked over a book about Maples. I was astonished at how many species of Maples there are in the world and how maddeningly similar many of them are. At my son's piano teacher's house there is a Maple in the yard that looks very much like this one. It also looks alot like Acer rubrum....but isn't. It's some wierd exotic that I can't identify.

A strange thing that mystifies all the professional botanists and geologists is that there are species in Asia that are quite simlar to those of Eastern North America and quite inexplicably so. Liquidambar is one. I have a feeling that this is one of those exotic Maples from Asia, occasionally planted here as an ornamental, that is similar, but not, Acer rubrum.

Again, you may be right. If we were out in the woods back in my native Delaware and saw it, I'd agree with you in a minute. But....I'm left scratching my head.

Rob I remember Barry saying that he would thread graft brand new branches onto this trident from a smaller leaf tree. Have you though about that as a possibility.
