It would be nice to see the actual tree to compare

But the end result is nice.

Good luck with this. Every birch I've tried (3 so far) died back at the apex and sprouted from the base. I have no explanation why.

Regards,

Matt

Thx Matt.
I would imagine birch to be hardy and quite easy. Will find out i supose, tho it survved a hard winter. Not bad considering its a mame and in a north facing aspect thats very windy in winter!
I pruned out the top branch earlier leaving one main one to fill out later.

Well I'm sure birches are not quite easy for me! Suspicions seem to be confirmed over at BCI:

"Birches are much loved for bonsai because of their elegant beauty, but they do not take easily to pot culture."

But there appear to be no specific details.

http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/birch.html

We generally have very moderate winters where I live.

Regards,

Matt

Have a couple that I collected this spring and have read that you must restrain the top a lot so as not to loose the bottom branches. they do like to sucker from the base. Good reference can be found again from Nick Lentz's " Bonsai From The Wild" If you can find it( there is a section on birches) and also a section in the book "Bonsai From Native Trees and Schrubs"by Werner M. Busch. If you dont have these on your bookshelf they are both great books on our native trees. Hope this helps some.
Regards,
