Mame-Japanese Maple Showing Ramification
I've had this little guy for six and half years now and every year I'm glad I forked out the $4.95 that it cost me when I eyed it at a bonsai convention vendor area. I just wish I would have gotten a few more. I don't know about that pot though. What do you think? When the tree is bare like now, it seems to be swimming in the pot, but when it's in full leaf, the thing hangs over the pot on all sides. Would any of you go for a smaller pot?

I think the width is fine but I'd go about half as shallow and and plant it a little higher in the pot. Does it have any nebari?
Of course that is if your going to exibit it. Otherwise I'd probably leave it in that pot if it turns you on. The tree looks very healthy and happy. I know trees that size dry out pretty fast.

In my opinion, That is without a doubt one of the finest trees I have seen here in a long time. That is wonderful, nice job.
BTW, smaller POT.

After the trunk thickens a little more below the first branch I'd probably do this.

Delightful!
Your little maple mame is wonderful. I love it - it does look better in a thinner pot. However, I am concerned that it will make it through your hot summers with less soil?? Do you have others and do you keep them in a tray of sand?
Gary -I am wondering why you want to lose the first branch - are you trying to eliminate the bar branching? I am not sure if that is the case but I think I see that. I guess I would be inclined to try wiring them - maybe one up and back and the other down and forward - as opposed to cutting off one of them. If that is possible ?

Boy do I love a good Japanese Maple... especially a mame! Wonderful specimen! And yes, I would go with everyone elses suggestion.. smaller pot. personally, I think the width would be better off shorter... but thats me. After looking at true Japanese Mame, I cant get off of tiny tiny pots.. LOL
