I like this pot better, but the main problem I see is its width.
The pot shouldn't be as wide as the tree, more like 2/3 the width. Maybe a little more shallow when the roots allow it and less wide. I also agree that one of the two first branches needs to go. The ramification is really nice! Doug

I'll second that. A smaller pot just shows off the size of mame better. I would err on the side of smallness, if I were choosing a pot...

Hey guys,
Don't forget, what you see today is not what you will be seeing six months from now. Once the new leaves push out, they will extend beyond the pot enough to hang over both ends I'm sure. If I were to go smaller now I think The tree would really be out of proportion with the pot when in leaf. As for the branches, I'm trying to let this tree imitate one in nature, and not so much the bonsai look. Thomas J. |

In that case you may want to stay away from a glazed oval pot altogether. I have seen some marvelous plantings in long, flat pots, with a tree placed to the side which were very similar to what you are describing. I think John Naka may actually have an illustration in BT I or II. I think that putting it in a glazed oval just invites people to think it is "following the rules of bonsai." Doug
