Looking For Bargains

Here's a spirea I found sitting along a fence row at a local nursery. Not sure if it will make a nice bonsai down the road, but for a price of $1, I figured I might as well try.

it has a nice nebari, and a good thick trunk, i think in a couple years you could have a nice tree

seeing the size, you will probably have to go with a shohin style, maby a broom, or A FORMAL UPRITE

i could see it looking something like this in a few years

I've had a spirea for a couple of years. The thing you want to watch for is that these plants will grow like weeds. They will send out shoots several feet long. You'll need to keep a close eye on it. Also, they tend to send out suckers at the base, which you'll have to watch as well.

Good luck with it!

Erik, that's promising material. Wish I could find stuff like that.

It wasn't until the third or fourth look that I spotted the can. Until then I was thinking of it as being approx 10" high (unless of course you have found a 2 litre root beer can... )

Regards,

TB

That's a nice trunk. Craig is right about these things suckering from the base. That's why it's so unusual to find a spirea with a nice single trunk like this one.
