Lonicera Nitida

This came from someone's front garden. Apparently it has had bonfires set on top of it, been hacked down to a stump, and had numerous other lesser known bonsai training techniques applied to it involving strimmers and machetes. Then it was dug up and eventually ended up in my hands.

It was obviously too tall, and the second skinny trunk was surplus to artistic requirements, although it did carry a good portion of the foliage.

A year later, August 2002.

Trying to get the foliage closer to the trunk. I could probably have done it in one major pruning, but I wasn't sure of the outcome so it did it in 2 stages. The 2nd skinny trunk was removed, and the stump jinned. Don't ask about the wire...

April 2003.

I now have the foliage close to the top of the trunk, like I wanted it.

Today, after a prune. I am rather surprised at the amount of growth since the last photo, less than 2 weeks ago.

I am particularly interested in pot suggestions, as always I am totally at a loss on that subject.

Virtuals & comments good and bad encouraged... I am pretty certain of the direction I am heading in with the top though, so you will have to be pretty persuasive if you want to change my mind...

Regards,

TB aka Chris.

I see a good future for this tree. I'd like to see it in a shallow glazed light green oval pot.

Hi René,

Thanks for your virtual. You have got the top exactly how I plan to do it!

The pot you show is a nice shape, but I'm not keen on the smooth pale blue glaze. I was thinking about something more earthy in texture and colour. What do you think?

Charles, I must admit to not much liking smooth pots. My wife once called them oven dishes, and since then I can't see a smooth pot without seeing casserole bubbling in it!

Of course, my absolute lack of skill in matching pot to tree could be leading me astray here... a smooth pot might well suit

Regards,

Chris.

Chris, wonderful, wonderful, Photo-essay! I like your material and handling of it very much. I know this tree is much less a vine than its cousin L. japonica which, based on a wonderful article in "Bonsai Today", I'm trying to work with, but it does somehow, at least to me, have a bit of the same essence. Especially the one I saw awhile back in "BT".

I, personally, in my state of blissful ignorance, think you are missing a good bet dismissing the idea of a smooth surfaced pot for this fine tree. I believe it would compliment the beautiful, smooth bark much better than a rougher, darker pot. A soft color, like Renee has suggested, I find perfect.

You've done such a great job up to now, however, that I think that we can all trust you to make the proper decision!

Best regards, Fred

A smooth pot will add a nice finish to the plant. I dont see a masculine tree when I look at that so I feel the pot should be feminine.
