Long Term Project

Here are some shots of a long term project.

This is a European Hornbeam, collected this March from Jim Doyle's place in PA.

As it looked after getting it home.

BTW, this is a friend I used to help me, he didn't want to use the digicam.

It's new home for the next several years, probably at least five. The box measures 36" x 36" x 8". It sits on four 4" casters to help me move it about.

Starting to clean off the field soil. We pretty much bare rooted the tree by the time we were done.

After about 2 hours finally in the box. I not really sure what the "twig" in there is. It was pretty tangled into the rootball, so it's going to stay for a while.

It looks really cool, I'm sure it will be an amazing bonsai. I wanted to do something similar with a tree of a similar size but maybe 3 times wider, but it was too big for my car, I think I need a truck, maybe someday I will get the money for it, so I will be able to do the same you did.

The tree I wanted to pick up, was a tree that was hitted by a car and was laying in the street with it's rootball really reduced, but the tree choped in two.

Good luck with your project

Nice trunk, and it seems to have an ok nebari for a collected tree. Could you give some more information of how you did dig that tree up?

Was the tree a naturally growing tree of which you cut the top off?

Had you made any root pruning before you took it up like one or two years before to get some fine root system near the trunk?

Good luck=)

Long term is right.

it's going to take quite a few years to get some taper on that baby.

I work with hornbeams. It does have a nice base to work from though.

I hope it sprouts in the right places for you DG.

Gary,

Yea, that's why it will probably stay in the box for five years. My first plan for root pruning is in two years. I might even think about pruning some branches by then. This tree is destined for nothing but food, sunlight, and water for the next two years.
Grow, baby, grow...

The final tree, as I see, it is about as tall as it is now. I'm not really sure what that is, maybe 38". The trunk at ground level is about 8~9" With the roots, maybe 13"

Maybe a real nice sumo?

I've read an atricle about a hornbeam styled by Danny Use of Belgium that looked like yours. He carved taper in it by using some heavy tools ( a chainsaw amongst others.. ) I saw it in real life during the Gingko awards last year and it looked very impressive. It did have branches at the time of collecting though so he had a head start... :-) I believe it was an article in Bonsai Europe but I'm not sure. Can't find any pictures on my harddisk...
Good luck with this one !

regards, René
