That's correct, though Ponderosa will sometimes only have two needles when grown in tough conditions.

The new buds/candles are also quite different. There isn't really a good enough shot of them on this tree, but what is there looks a lot more like Contorta than Ponderosa.

Bingo! Sort of... I could get into a listing of the various pines in the NW & how to identify them, but the best thing to do is get Trees To Know in Oregon (applies to WA & ID too!) from the OSU Extension service - which you can get at any USFS office in Oregon or online.

The bark on this tree is great. It's looks like a cork bark. I too have collected ponderosas with 2 needles. They were growing horizontally on a rock. But I'm not sure if this one is a ponderosa or a lodgepole. Might be Lodgepole, their needles are greener that Ponderosas.
