I think Pootsie's virtual is a very realistic goal. Here's another virtual just to consider if the right side branch gives a balance to the design. It's just a quick one to consider options. Good looking material.

I think Lee`s virt is the way to go. With the trunk being so thin the less foliage the better it also allows the viewer to look at the trunk. The only thing I would think twice about is a shari, because the trunk is so thin it might close up quickly and also leave a nasty callous, but on the other hand the callous may thicken the trunk up a bit.I know it`s a bit of a contradiction but something to think about.Nice tree.

Ian.

Here is an update on the tree.
Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions.

I went with something close to Will's suggestion due to the distribution of the other branches. (Looks like he has borrowed Vance's X-ray eyes ).
I may yet loose the current apex completly but this restyle has opened the tree up and improved the look tremendously.
It is very hard to show the movement on this tree in 2 dimensions, so I have attached pics of all four sides.

Thanks again

Mike

Here are the other two sides.
BTW the guy wire is only there to prevent the tree from being blown out of the pot, not to shape the tree. The trunk was wired as part of an experiment from this Article thread
The extra weight from the application of the wire has made the tree a bit unstable so I took this as a precaution.

Mr. Mike,

Congratulations on achieving an extremely elegant and graceful literati style tree...This is one which will go into my "preferred stylings" folder...My preference for front based on the 2d photos you have shown is #23336, but as we all are aware, the photo does not always give the best overall impression of a front...The wider more flat canopy does give the tree a nice feeling of 'age', and the 'hanging' jin accentuates this very well...I do think this tree would look very nice in a more "rustic" pot...I really like some of the 'altered' literati pots made by Dale Cochoy, but you do have many excellent potters much closer to you than Dale is...

Once again very nice work...Please keep us updated on the progress of this tree...

Regards
Behr

not even sure what I mean here but the problem seems to me to be coming from the first major bend in the trunk-perhaps if you can somehow move that bend up to about two thirds or three quarters of the main trunk height while retaining some of the interesting movement in the lower trunk-at the moment the tree seems to be in two parts--looks like it has a ' broken back'-------but maybe its caused by the viewing direction-----signed 'unsure'
