I think that this larch has a potential, but I confess I find this curving shape a bit unusual. To me, it looks as if it was both strong, but lacked of a backbone, as if the trunk had turned into rubber. And a literati, to me, is supposed to evoke both knowledge, strength, and wisdom, it should have its head high above, not slouch downward. I'm much more classical in my approach I must admit. But it's not my tree... If it were, this is the idea I would try to work on : ![]() I would also use a smaller pot. IMHO. Alain |

Major restyling on bunjin Larch
Hi All,
The first photo is made when the larch got its folliage early this year. I wasn't to keane with this styling, so I completely restyled it. More in the style that AlainK suggested. Hope I succeeded. How do you feel about the tree now? Which front will be the best choice? regards and thanks for your comments and replys, Wessel

Huge improvement! Nice job.
My one suggestion would be that the bends in the main trunk are too orderly (similar in size and rhythm) and too gradual for my taste. Best regards, Carl Edit: I forgot to add that I like the middle tree, but perhaps this is unsurprising as I like trees that move left to right more than trees that move right to left - but that was another thread...

I prefer the image in the last picture, Wesel. Nice job!
I agree a little with Carl. I just bought a larch (decidua) yesterday. Just a skinny little thing to learn how to care for larch before I invest a lot in a speicies I am (currently) not familiar with. I hope to get a nice one some day. In the meantime, my larchie-beanpole will probably follow yours to a degree. pootsie |

Almost 1 year later, here's an update on the tree. Repotted today in a drumpot. As you will see, the crown of the tree is changed severely, due to dieback of the former top. I have to rebuild the crown completely. Also done a lot on bending the lower part of this Larch, cause I didnt like the straigthness of this part of the trunk. Not quit visible on this photo is a nice thick surface root on the rightside.
I'll post some more pictures as the new needless are developing. How am I doeing sofar? Thanks, Wessel

Hi Wessel,
Although literati is not one of my preferred styles, I like the contorted trunk on this one. Is there a nice nebari or are you working on developing it? Some of my Japanese larch are just breaking open now, so yours should be too far behind. All the best, Aaron

G'day Wessel,
How do you know it is a Larix kaempferi? Did you buy this one from Drenthe? Next time you visit me ask me to show you a couple of L.K.s that I've given the Nejikan experience to, they're very flexible as you should know, and I think that your tree's styling could be much more adventurous, upwards and outwards is where I would go, am none too keen on that pot you've chosen, just my opinion. Regards, Nigel

hmmm...
Wessel I think I am of AlainK's mind, being classical in approach, especially with literati. I like a graceful curve or the odd change in direction, but I prefer a trunk free of significant S curves in literati. But it's not a bad effort at all... Come to think of it... I think I have a overall uninterest with S curve trunks in general... lol (Too much talking with Wes I think.. ) My feelings on it are such, that the one S curve trunked tree I have is going to a good home here in a month, when a friend gets back from vacation... So maybe you should just ignore me my friend....lol I do always enjoy to see what you are working on though! Your friend as ever, |

I also liked the virt from AlainK and probably would have gone that way. The current bends are still usable the branch lines now need to have some dance put into them. The current pot really throws me off, it just feels way to small for the tree.
