Tree number two......really isn't. It's just a mess. I'm posting it here to show how the variegated variety tend to stay small and stalky, and are cascaders...big time. The stems seem to be weaker than the "normal" variety (hey, I smell a comparison paper coming up.....hrm....) and this is what happens if you just let one grow for a year :0. That's an 8" pot it's in (I think ...)

Here's something to do with those one sided cuttings (like what comes off when you cut a cascading branch).....do raft plantings! This is a barely started (4 months?) cutting in a 6 inch pot. You can see how every branch is now a little tree. I did give it some help with roots by poking each node ( growth joint) with a knife, it seems to cause the roots to come out faster. Those fibrous things on the left side are roots that've been exposed.

This is my one surviving rock planting. It's planted on featherstone from Home Depot. I used too much clay when making the muck and it hardened on the other planting, this one was kept in the shade more and didn't dry out. Sooner or later I'll figure out how to replace the muck....

This is another Portulacaria cutting that was stuck in a pot and left alone. The lowest small right branch is a sacrifice to try and bring in some more taper. I'm thinking this one will end up being a windswept, with an opposing branch that has stubbornly grown the other way. The second pic shows more of the bark texture, and another sacrifice branch (coming straight up off branch number one). Any branches growing straight up thicken pretty quickly and even the sacrifices have to be trimmed to keep them in check. The texture and close internodes are from the plant not getting a lot of supplimental water.

This Portulacaria afra is an oddball, dug out of the discard heap a couple days after being chopped off of a plant that had been knocked over (not mine). The drying out time gave it some character, althoug it's never really grown well. Another Portulacaria that doesn't fit in a traditional style! If it were growing better, I'd cut all the branches close into the trunk and let it fill out. Sometimes they just get spindly... I figured I'll see how it grows this spring and go from there. The original styling of the trunk was done with wiring and clip and grow methods.

Last pics for tonight, more later
.This is more of a raising thing.....if you see this happening on your Portulacaria afra, pull off the oversized leaf. That leaf is about 1/2 as big again as a "normal" leaf, and is also robbing the new branch of nutrients. Once you pull (I actually just twist so I don't pull the whole tip off) the oversized leaf, the little branch will grow faster. This is a sign that I've been overwatering this plant-also note the long spindly internode between the large leaf and the next set of leaves. The internode after that (tip down) is more in scale. When I see the spindly growth, I know to cut back on the water. Okay.....I'll stop being a thread hog for now ![]() |

Ok thread hog back....
This was one that was growing up against the side of a pot, hence the flattened base. The movement was intersting though, so I'm going for another windswept... for now the mud men hide the flat spot! Pic with the hand is for scale... a large scar is visible halfway down the trunk where I cuut off a branch that was growing straight up. Took me a while to decide if the branch would be the top or if I was continuing the flow to be a windswept ![]() |

This one is a prime example of how a tree can look one way in a pic and another in life......
In a front pic, this looks like a halfway decent tree (after some styling). What you don't see is that this tree is *flat*, as the second picture shows. This one has a lot of wiring in its future to pull some branches backwards and balance it better ![]() |
