"It's interesting the way we choose "traditional" styles for the Jade's - I guess I wouldn't really know how one should look in a "natural" state "

Can't speak for "normal" jade, but p. afra looks like a giant bush in nature according to the pictures I've seen! Not very bonsai-ish LOL. Course, several species we use turn into bushes/thickets in nature so....

Great theory on why p. afra is occasionally snubbed (too easy to grow) . Oh.....and you can't *quite* plant a leaf, it will not grow anything other than roots (no branches!) unless there's a piece of stem attached too... But close enough LOL.

If anyones interested, there's a great discourse on p. afra at
http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/Portulacaria.html
More info than you ever wanted to know......not much in it about bonsai uses, but lots about it otherwise. And the author actually listens when you send him info he didn't have ! Thought that was pretty cool.

Okay enough posts without pictures...... I *will* take pics this weekend .

"Newt, Those pots are an excellent choice. Did you make them?"

No I have not made any pots yet although I do want to try some time. The mame and the wood grain were made by a friend of mine who is graduating from The Columbus Institute of Arts this spring. Her name is Michelle Dick. The rocky looking pot is actually a reptile watering dish that can be found at Discount Pet Center. I just drilled some drainage holes, and removed some material with a dremel to give a little more root room.

Thanks for the interest!!!

Something just occurred to me, and this seems as good a place as any to ask:

Can jades be grafted? Seems like they'd be as amenable to it as they are every thing else. I've got a branch I'd like to just move.

Appreciate any info.

They're just cuttings so far....but look at the nice and flat rootbase on this one! I may plant them together as a clump, they're currently living in the greenhouse.

I have never grafted a jade before but I don't see a reason they wouldn't be amenable to grafting. I would imagine the easiest way to do it would be to thread graft a long rooted cutting.

These plants are tough. The jade in my post suffered severe damage after a large piece of timber fell on it while building my display area. the main first branch was broken and was attached by a thread of living tissue. I placed it on an "orthopedic" aparatus (vet wrap with some wire) and it healed completely in about 8 months. I used some wood stain and painted over the scar and, voila, it is barely noticeable.

more pics

I went out and took pics of my other jades. The outside one has been in 3 garage sales for $20.00 and is still here. The naked one is the one I posted eariler the leaves were all sunburned and I hope to get the leaves to come in smaller, it's going on the front porch soon.

I have no pictures of mine, nor are they worth posting here. But my Portulacaria afra were the only indoor bonsai that looked better this spring than they did last fall. My ficus and schefleras only held their own under the same conditions.

Here's my dinky little jade. I got him last year for $5US at a garden center, about half this size. After seeing some really big jades at the Potomac Show, my general plan is to alternate growth and back budding. Gimme ten years and he should be very nice!

My pretties...

Jades, I love them (Portulacarias and Crassulas )

--> The first one is a monster... the left "trunk" is 5 inches, perhaps this one takes the "natural" look of a jade better?
Its gonna flower soon, I might post a pic when it does
--> 2nd one is a little Shohin, found it as a neglected cutting last year, hah hah
--> 3rd one is a cutting taken 4 years ago in my first year of Bonsai, one of two trees that has survived its first year with me >xP

How does one reduce the leaf size of a Crassula Jade?

Okay, pics as promised. First, my favorite little one. It has a million things wrong with it (bar branches are just a start!) but if you don't analyze it, it's a little tree . Took me a while to like it because my brain wouldn't wrap around all of its issues... Just got repotted from a 4 inch pot to this 6 inch pot, it's about 7 inches tall and 1 inch at the base. Technically I guess it's shohin but it started out as mame. Problem with the Portulacaria is the just keep growing, hard to keep as mame .
