At least a start with a nursery juniper
Bear in mind that I am brand new to this
. I purchased a nursery stock type juniper from the local bonsai nursery. I am going to post the before and after picures here. Please don't laugh too hard when you see them. The tree is about 5 years old.Jess |

Re: At least a start with a nursery juniper
It looks like you might be able to divide this pair and have two trees to work with. There appear to be two trunks of about equal size. You could do this with a root saw or sharp knife by cutting right through the root ball, or you could work from the bottom with a root hook and try to divide the root mass and create more evenly distributed root systems than a simple division might give.
Twin trunk bonsai are fine if the trunks are distinctly different in size and thickness, but the pair here appear to have irreconcilable similarities ![]()

Re: At least a start with a nursery juniper
Is this your first attempt at carving out a nursery plant? If it is you have done a nice job. IMHO your back seems like a good front to me. I get the feeling of crossing trunks in your front. I like the fact that you left some stubs for future jins. This tree begs for some wiring though. I feel that about 4 to 5 hours spent on wire will give you a great tree. I will virtual it and post it later. Regards, Al Keppler

Re: At least a start with a nursery juniper
Thanks for the comments. Yes it is the first one that I have tried. I will post a pic in a bit in the pot that I got for it today, and see if I can get more of a top shot. Then you will be able to see the way that the trunks twist around in symmetry. That is one of the reasons that I would hesitate to seperate the trunks. They are almost like twins, but different. Let me get another pic of the tree from a higher angle so you can see the trunks better. Thanks for all of the input, that is what I am looking for. I have not been into bonsai long at all, only about a month and am really enjoying it.

Here is a couple of pics of the tree in his new pot. There is one straight on and one from the top view so you can see the placement of the limbs and trunks better.

Re: At least a start with a nursery juniper
Very nice pot. You have done some readin somewhere though. You seem to have the tree planted just right. Most beginners will plant the tree to low the first time around. You have mounded the soil up nicly. i was going to do a virtual of this tree, but with the overhead shot you have thrown me for a loop. You still need to tidy up the foilage with some wire, and i think that the tree will shape up real nice. i think I se a wind swept tree in there. i will look some more. Regards, Al Keppler.

Re: At least a start with a nursery juniper
![]() Here are a couple more. I trimmed one of the bigger branches in the front to lighten one pad of foilage, then jinned the remainder of the branch that was removed. I also have jinned two of the smaller ones on the back. The idea is to try to make it lok like branches were broken from the center of the tree. I have left one of the "broken" branches lying at the base of the tress for affect . I have wired two of the smaller branches to emphasize what may end up being a semi-cascade.Hopefully this is a bit better. It looks a lot better to me. Jess |
