Hi Jorge....

Might I suggest that you make a trip to Home Depot and purchase tubs that morter is mixed. There are 2 sizes that I know of and work quite well. You would have to drill some drainage holes in the tubs, and that's easy to do.
Another thing I have done is to visit some local landscape contractors and see about buying some large nursery containers. I have done both over the years and reuse all of these containers when I move the cypress into bonsai pots.

Hope this helps and...

Best Always

Tons of excelent ideas for training pots! I really appreciate it.

Irene, the story behind these urban yamadoris actually pre-dates our Bald Cypress weekends at David's place. Both of them were growing as landscape trees behind a Catholic convent next door to my daughter's school. I drive her to school every morning and she got used to see her dad drooling over the idea of collecting that tree. Fate has its twists and one fine day I met one of the nuns from the convent as a patient. As it turns out, she was the person who actually planted these tree several years ago. I knew there were plans for new construction behind the convent and I was straightforward with her about my desire for these trees. She immediately gave me the consent and was happy to know they would not go to waste. The second tree was a bonus. There's also a third tree and I have permission to collect it as well. It is away from the construction site so I am not in a rush to get it and I will go back next year. And nope, I'm not giving away the address or GPS coordinates to find it.

Collecting the big one was a monumental task even with my 10 year old son as a helper. I think I got a hernia, a ruptured disk, broken fingernails, infected cracks in the palms of my hands and a bad headache afterwards. The tree would simply not come out. I finally got it out yanking it off the ground with two large chains attached to a 4WD pick-up truck. There was a 7-inch thick tap root attaching it all the way down to China. The trauma and large wounds left on the bark led me to believe it was not going to make it. Like I said, I'm happy to anounce it is coming back slowly but surely. Its alternate fate for this beauty would have been a face-off with a bulldozer.

Long story but it looks like we'll have a happy ending. I hope I didn't put you to sleep...

Jorge

This is why we need 1 ton four wheel drive carbon pukers in the south. Cheers, This is a long and noble tradition for Bald Cypress collection from spots close enough to the road that a choker (see logging wiki) can be set. Bravo, John

What happened to the romance?

No motorized or power equipment should be allowed in the act of bonsai procurement. A mortal sin. Even when I visit my local bonsai supply shop I walk and carry goods home on my back. In 99 degree weather being attacked by wild dogs.

PS. I can repair umbilical hernias in my garage on men and women. If you need help please feel free to contact Dr. Kong. We do not use anesthesia so there is no hang over. We bite down on sticks like the good ole days. Wild out of control screaming does not bother Dr. Kong so there will be no extra charge. If a patient tries to hurt the Dr for payback reasons, he or she will be hit on the head with a rock. Gore is our goal to get you up and running...fast!

License? What is this thing? I will hit you on the head with a rock. By the way, my financial advisor tells me the banks are going down the tubes and by september we are going to bite the big weenie. Wish us luck and pray to the bonsai gods we pull out of this nightmare.

Back to our regular broadcast of 'baldies'....this has been just a warning. That's all. Who cares...it's just your home...give to the bank.

Largest one had its angled chop yesterday... In case anyone asks, that's a nice cold bottle of Shiner Bock at the base...
