Larch Styling

This is a Larch I picked up from WeeTree. I've been thinking about the possibilites. Anyone have any ideas they'd like to share?

Zone??

I am no expert when it comes to Larch but I have tried and seen others try them without success in zone 8? The heat of the summer does them in. I think I would suggest considering letting this tree acclimate to your climate for a season or two before I did any styling. An alternative choice of species that offers similar charateristics and would do better in your climate is Bald Cypress.

Hopefully I won't have any problems with this one. My other larch (and a few other species) spend the hotest part of the summer under my big shade trees and have done quite well.
By the way your Koi are absolutely gorgeous!

Koi man,

I would chop it hard this spring to get some taper. Here is a quick virt (chop at the red line). Hot summers can kill it, but It's worth a try. Kepp the humidity down, and if you have trouble with it, just send it over here to Seattle. LOL

Totally agree with the Meister here, but for getting even more taper, do you know the "Larch with a taper" article, written by Nick Lenz? Thats really the way to get taper on your larches.

Good luck, Wessel
