Kusamono: Aging Gracefully

Hello everyone,

In one of the recent chat sessions, we were talking about the relative merits of putting together an accent plantings right before a show, versus keeping them together year-round.

My feeling is that they do really change over time, and mostly for the better - toward a more compact, more grown-together, more natural and elegant form.

Here's a good example of what only three or four months' time can do.

This is an accent planting I put together in late May, photographed right after I planted it. I've posted it here before.

Here it is today, in early September. It's changed a lot, mostly for the better I think, though I miss the darker red highlights on the sempervivens.

Which do you prefer?

Best regards,
OMC

Wow, that looks great now. I think that it needs a different pot though.

Is that the same plant on the right? It seems to have shrunk! The grass has improved in the texture as it now has tendrils, but most of it seems to be on the point of thinning again.

Regards,

Matt

Growing old gracefully cosmetic surgery more like! That sempervivens has had silicone implants

Serious now, I like it.

TB

It is the same plant on the right, and yes, it has shrunk - or reduced, or whatever you want to call it. And multiplied profusely. Instead of five whorls, there are now more like 20. It's pushing the sedum to the left right out of the pot, so I'll have to thin at spring repotting.

I just wish it hadn't lost those red highlights. Maybe too much sun, I don't know.

Best regards,
Carl
