Kingsville boxwood, major trimming

My last post was "Three old Kingsville Boxwoods". I decided to do a major trim on this one today. The three pix are before, after, and the pile of trimmings I swept up after I was done.
As Naka-sensei would say, "Now,the birds can fly through".

Very nice stock Mike, excellent!

If it were my bonsai I might do away with the bar branches on the left side, the lower branches and take out what appears to be the crossed branch on the right side, just my opinion. I can not do good virtuals, buts here's a rough idea.

Where do you find such nice stock?

Will

Wonderful tree Mr. P!

With all due respect, I disagree with will's assessment. IMHO, removing the lower branches as he has in the virt makes the tre look vastly younger. As is, it has the feel of a great old oak, and I dig it!

Now the pot, that's another matter. Given the spreading old-oak feel, I would think a very shallow pot or slab would work.

Thanks for sharing.

I love the look after you thinned out the crown. It has a beautiful branch structure.

What about raising the nebari a little to show some more legs (I mean root base )?

Regards,
Attila

Poots raised an important point. Making the pot shallower would give the trunk more power (and these tiny boxwoods can use all the help they can get, since they grow so slow).

Pootsie, the oak is my usual model for styling the Kingsville. There will be more work on all the branches. I just bought this tree from a man who owned it for many years, but hasn't done much work on it lately due to illness.
Regarding a pot, I'll bring it down slowly. I don't like to go too shallow however, as Kingsvilles thrive better with more root room.

Atilla, when I repot, I'll check out the legs on this critter. You'll be seeing more of this Kingsville, as I have high hopes for is as an exhibit bonsai. Time will tell.

Repotted

I repotted the Kingsville today. It was severely rootbound, and appeared to have not been repotted for about 10 years. I removed about 2/3 of the roots and washed most of the old soil away. This pot, an old Shigaraki, is a little over 1/2 the volume of the last pot. It is oversize, but it's necessary as part of the rehab of this bonsai. Height including the pot is 14 inches.

hey mike,
good lookin tree, upon inspection of the more recent picture i am noticing a little reverse taper, perhaps this could be minimalized by showing a bet more "Leg" and also the lower branch on the right side could be shortened to better round out the top, or perhaps allow some sparse foliage to grace the bare spots on that side, that would fill it nicely as well.

just thoughts. i enjoy your tree.

DIATRIBE.
