Just back from Water Elm dig

Spent the weekend digging water elms with some friends. This is the biggest one I came home with. Didn't seem so big when I dug it but it seems to have grown on the way home. Didn't have a pot to put it in so I had to use the dogs swimming pool. My intensions were to dig smaller trees this time but they just don't have the character the big ones have. And it is really hard to pass up these gnarly ones. There are more stories about this trip but I will leave the story telling to John (Vons Gardens).

They look bloody huge... :-) Loads of potential though. Do you have to keep them completely soaked in water after collection or did you just feel they looked a bit hot and bothered?

We were collecting Larch at the weekend - I know just how much fun there is to be had.

Claus, you sneaky devil. Get yours potted up? Have enough soil?

OKbonsai, Nice "gnarly" tree.

Ralph, Actually this is about the only time that you can dig these where we go. The water will be anywhere from 6" to 10' deep at other times when the Dam is closed (or flood control is being practiced). As we buried the 4x4 up to the floor boards tryingto get down to a new area this time, can't imagine what it would be like in the "wet" season. Anyway, we pretty much defoliate them, wrap in burlap or plastic and then fairly completely bareroot and pot when we get them home. They don't have to stand in water, mine are placed in a 50/50 mixture of composted bark and (I know but I ran out of turface) calcined clay (aka Oil dry).

....I'm jealous...I love to go collecting and it's the wrong season for everything here. I don't know if we have these in my part of the state. Claus, where's your pics?
