Juniperus Squamata

This is a Juniperus squamata (needle juniper) that I am working on. First before styling was done. The foliage at the bottom was dead. That's why it was in the bargains corner of the nursery :-))

Whoosh! The before and after on this tree is amazing. Nicely done (as usual)! What do you have in store for this tree next?

Beautiful job with an unusual species. I really like what you've done. How long did you say you've been doing bonsai??!!

I personally think you could get away with even less foliage. I'd take off the entire left side branch, to tell the story of a tree not windswept but blasted by the north wind from that left side.

Best regards,
Carl / OMC

If this is unclear, let me know and I can try to hack together a virtual...

OMC you are right. Removing the left side branch would make the tree look even better than it is now. Great job Rene.

Yep...and it's funny - now that I think about it, removing that left-side branch will leave you with a tree striking similar to one that styled with John Biel at our latest club workshop. I'll try to snap a picture soon...

Cheers,
OMC

Hi all,

Thanks for the compliments ! Rips, I'm doing bonsai for 1 1/2 years now so I'm very much a beginner. I don't know about cutting of the left branch. I wasn't planning a windswept.. I have started to like literatis and this is supposed to become one (in a few years) If you have any pics of the tree you mentioned I'd like to see it..

rgds, René
