Re: Juniperus

That's a tough piece of material.. Grafting is your best bet and would let you get improved shimpaku (sargent juniper) foliage right where you want it. Downside is: it's tricky to learn.

You can certainly cut the plant back to the lowest green branches and that will drive backbudding from the trunk, but Juniper tends to throw branches from the inside of crooks and at the base of current branch unions. Might be worth a try though.

Re: Juniperus

Levon: You can airlayer the largest branch just below the multiple branches, After you have achieved roots you can repot and prun back the top and shape your bonsai. After remoning the airlayer attempt to graft three or four shoots onto the heavy trunk, If one or two of these take you will have a beautiful tree to work with.
When I work with larger trees I will get multiple bonsai out of each tree that I am working with often using diffrent techniques on one tree. On one large green mountian maple that I am working with. I have 5 airlayerings going at one time. At this time they are unruly and over grown but when I have roots and remove them from the parent tree I will choose limbs and pruin back to create smaller bonsai. When you have material that is overgrown airlayering is an invaluable technique that you can use to recreate good bonsai.

Re: Juniperus

Levon,
The windswept juniper I posted on the Spring Gallery was similar. I tried Matt's idea of shaping the tree and then plan to keep trimming it back, hoping that I can eventually chase it back to a compact tree. If what Matt says is true then it may risky to see if it happens. So that is an idea.

Rips idea is probably better. You have to have some patience but you could get several great trees.

Re: Juniperus

It kind of looks like a Juniperus sabina variety. I don't see where it would hurt to try Matt's advice and
try your hand at doing a little grafting. Get a book on it and buy yourself a small Shimpaku juniper and let it rip.

In the meantime you could do some airlayering too.

Grafting can become a great hobby in itself!

BTW, Juniperus xmedia "Shimpaku" is a cross between Juniperus sabina and Juniperus chinensis (according to Welch). The Juniperus plumosa and media debate still is in flux. The grafts should take if all goes well.

Re: Juniperus

I am new to the whole bonsai experience but purchsed one at a plant fair at Foster Gardens in Honolulu. i think it is a Juniper but to tell youthe truth I am not positive. I am attaching a pic I took with a web cam ( may not have the best resolution). It seesm to be losing some of it fullness. I had in mostly shade but recenlt moved it to tofull sun.

Can anyome identify what I have and give me some tips to keep it healthy and growing?

Re: Juniperus

That's a juniper. The majority sold in the bonsai trade are Procumbens Juniper.

The most important thing to learn with a juniper is to keep it outside, give it a lot of sun and learn to water it properly. Whoops. That's three things.

Anyway, you can learn more in the ***watering_faq*** and also in the bonsaiTALK Links in the beginner's section.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Juniperus

Here's the latest status of my Juniperus. There are two trunks left, with different styles. I'll probably keep the first trunk.
