Sorry Matt,

I think I got it all straightened up now. Thanks for the help and deleting the old messed up thread.

This is my current setup, I realize it's very poor. I will work to improve it as knowledge and funds increase. My sickly maples currently fall into shadow around noon, and the healthier maple and the juniper enjoy sunlight until 1:30-2 in the afternoon.

My first bonsai. This is the juniper I bought from a travelling bonsai saleman.

This is the healthiest maple taken from my yard. Where it was it would have surely been mown over, but it seems to be doing fairly well in the pot.

This is a very sick maple rescued from a very bad location in my yard. It was bug eaten and wilted so bad it was laying on the ground, but still green.

My father retrieved this sickly and bug eaten tree from somewhere. I do not know how this will fair, but it is still green at the core. I do think this little devil is responsible for bringing aphids to my trees. There will be either lady bugs, or diatomaceous earth added to my plants tommorow.

It appears to me that your biggest problem is lack of sun. Many of the plants are being hidden in the shade because of the setup of your stand.

Try placing 4 cinderblocks on the ground, 2 on top of eachother and the other two 6 feet away on top of each other. Then, place a 6 foot long by 1 foot wide piece of wood on top of the cinderblocks. It works as a good makeshift bonsai stand for beginners.

I've been trying not to give the three junipers too much sun. They were poorly when I planted them, and I don't want them to over heat.

The table is aligned north to south, and the three plants in shadow get a least 5-6 hours of sun a day without being in shadow.

As the day goes on the shadow of a nearby tree overtakes the plants on top, and the shadow of the table shades the plants below. So the two plants pictured in the sunlight get 7-8 hours of sunlight a day.

If this is not enough, I can rearrange things a bit.

john, just a thought, but those look more like saplings than juvinile trees. maybe try a different locations for those maples. some where in you yard where they can get a couple hours of sun in the morning, be partially shaded to shaded in the midday to protect them from the hottest sun, and be exposed to a few more hours of light in the evening. i purchased 5 jap. maples from walmart @$5 each, call it a rescue effort. none of them were doing all that well, but i placed them in an area similar to that which i described and they have ALL come back, new leaves, buds, everything. anyhow, just a suggestion. good luck.

Chris -

That is exactely what I am going for. Unfortunately I lost one of the maples. ONe is looking better everyday. Green, perky, and standing up straight. The others are borderline.
