The bonsai robot posted an article which stated that jins looked natural on a maple. I think the wood is too soft, and probably wouldn't look that natural at all. It would be better Sam, if you're interested in carving, to create 'uro'. They would probably look more natural on your maple. Don't worry if the tree is poor visually, use it for practice.
