Juniper Procumbens-One Years Work

I bought this procumbens juniper about a year ago and am quite amazed at how it progressed in one years time. This is what the tree looked like at purchase. Not too much going for it, but I saw a future in this one.

The thing I really liked about it was the mature foliage it had which resembled a shimpaku. After getting it home I immediately went to work on it styling it from what I thought I saw at the nursery where I bought it. A little clipping and wiring produced this.

This picture was taken last week. The one thing I wished wouldn't happen did happen; the foliage reverted back to juvenile this spring. Nothing I could now but continue on track with my plans for the final styling. There was and still is a lot to clean up because the juvenile foliage is so much more bushy looking.

And here is the final styling done a few days ago. As I said there is still a lot more to clean up before I am satisified with it, but it's coming along really good I think.

Nice development Thomas, it still looks good even in juvenile clothing.

Say, was wondering what feeding regiment you have (for your junipers) , mind passing on a little trade secret?

Thanks for all the great comments guys. As for my feeding, I use basically organic. I use a product called Espoma Hollytone which is a bit of an acidic organic fertilizer. It will cause fungus gnats though so I use it basically in the Spring. After that I will use mainly fish emulsion and sometimes a small application of Miracid to help give it the trace minerals it needs. The trace minerals are very important for junipers to stop them from yellowing inside. I also will give them a shot of Chelated Iron from time to time which also has the trace minerals. Of course contrary to some peoples belief, there's nothing better than good old rain to keep them nice abd green. Here in Tx. in the summer rain is usually far from here but this year has been is a rarity for us. Here it almost July and we're getting rain like never before. I love it.

Just a side note. Anyone who has read my member profile will probably remember that most of my inspiration for my juniper work comes from artist Shane Carey who is a member of our local club and whose trees I've been admiring for quite some time. I heard that he had won the Chase Rosade award for the second time at the BCI convention held recently. Here is a link to a picture of the tree that won the award. It's the shimpaku.Shane Carey tree
