Juniper Procumbens- My How You've Grown
I'm sure most of you are pretty familiar with this procumbens juniper of mine. This pic was taken last April, not too long after I restyled it from the way it was when I purchased it.

This is the way it looked immediately after a partial restyling with a new temporary pot, since I couldn't use the same pot because of the 45degree turnaround. This pic was taken before any wiring was done to it, only branch pruning or a basic clean up.

After the basic clean up came the wiring and then put into a round pot which is what you see at the top of the post. This is the way it looks today after going through a rough hot Texas summer, and yet another pot.

IMHO - Great progress. The foliage outline appears more gentle in both movement and shape than the trunkline. I wonder what it would look like if the foliage reflected the trunk line and looked more weathered and aged?

Hey Thomas,
Did you have to prune the roots when you moved it into the new pot? In your experience with procumbens, and junipers in general, what time of year is it okay for our weather to repot? |

Hi Ralph,
I avoided cutting the roots by putting the tree in a little bit bigger container. I usually don't like to mess with the roots as in an actual repotting where you comb them out, and clean some of the old soil off, until early spring. For us here in Tx. that would be in Feb. to early March. I try not to be too stressful on my trees during the hot months which again for us would from late april till late Sept. and even into Oct. some times. I have a few procumbens which will be going into somewhat smaller pots, and I will need to do some heavy root pruning on them, so I'll be waiting until Feb. for this. Hope this helps.

For reasons I'm not sure I understand (but they may have to do with the relative heights of the lowest left an lowest right branches), it looks more static now than in the picture of post #1. Is that what you intended? (Not necessarily a criticism, merely an observation and a question.)
How tall is the plant? Thanks, Barry |
