Juniper procumbbus

On a recent trip to Seattle I picked up two trees. One is this J. procumbus sp. ( not nana ). I really like the tree but it has a major fault. In the photo , the red line prety much defines the trunk and the red dot is where the problem is. At this point the trunk turns 90 degrees and points directly at the viewer , obviously a problem. Should I try to turn the trunk or should I chop it at the turn ? BTW , if I do chop it I'm thinking of air layering it off.

I also intend to jin the trunk on the left. Good or bad idea.

The second photo ( I hope ) is a shot of the main single trunk at it's base.

Hey Dwight,

Great trees. Should give you a lot to work with over time.

Although I can't see too much of the architecture up higher, it probably will present no problem since the tree will undoubtedly be reduced substantially, maybe even radically, when you start to shape it.

I'd do very little to it this season, just let it acclimate to the rather severe change from this climate to yours, water and feed carefully, etc. Then just sit with it occasionally, turning it this way and that, tilting it at various angles, imagining it with various trunks or branches bent, reduced, or even completely chopped or jinned, and see if some direction jumps out at you at some point.

BNW always has such great material. Glad you made it by.

G'day DF...

"...turns 90 degrees and points directly at the viewer , obviously a problem...".

"...obviously a problem..."? If you want to use the "pointer", you select a different front. If you don't want to use the "pointer", you cut it off...or jin it. The "obvious" problem is gone.
