Juniper! opinions and criticism

I'd love to know what people have to say about this particular tree I have in training. It's by no means finished yet but I am proud of how it's coming along.

I have to admit it's been difficult to find this trees image! it was bought as rough stock, and pretty much started it's life as a slanted style. Then, my skill gre a little so I decided to make a windswept, which wasn't right! so it got filed away. I dragged it out again recently and this is how it is now.

I have some more ideas, like driftwooding the main trunk, and possibly lowering the crown to the next branch and jinning the very top!?!? .. I don't know. Yesterday I was very proud of it ... now! I'm not sure .. your opinions please?

I thinks it's fantastic. I am by no means an expert but it looks like you have a great eye.

personaly,i would do something about the scar on the trunk, see matts "camelia bonsai repot"in the general disscusion forum.and possably look into creating a new apex to shorten the tree.
it is pretty, maybe a more shallow pot woult help the appearence of tallness.
good growing!

Attached is an 'artists impression' of what I would like it to look like ... excuse the crudeness but I believe it gives an idea of what I would like to achieve ...

leaving a jinned twig at the top where the apex used to be is an option I'll decide if and when I ever get to this stage lol

anyway! here it is.

Glenn:

You have a beautiful tree there! I am just a beginner so take my comments with a grain of salt. It appears that there is too much trunk below the first branch. If the nebari were to occur about where the scar is below the first branch the proportions of the entire tree might be more balanced. I guess this could be done by air layering but it would take a lot of new roots to support the tree as it is. I will be real interested to hear other comments from the experts on this one because I really like what you have done so far.

Glenn, here is my idea. I have tilted the tree slightly.
You can also add driftwood on the trunk if you like.

Re: Juniper! opinions and criticism

I love have my tree under this virtual scalpel

I've attached my own virtual bonsai, from my own ideas and suggestions from this page. tell me what you think.

Can I also say, that this is my first time I have ever had a tree being discussed on the web, or in a forum, and so far I am really pleased with the feed back I've had. Only problem being that when I'm on line everyone else is in bed lol thanks everyone.

Re: Juniper! opinions and criticism

Glenn,
You have good start to a great Literati style tree here!

Walter has put it in the proper pot for you & done a beautiful virtual as he always does.

Your virtual is a little heavy on the foliage for a Literati style though.

If it were mine (now I'm sticking my neck out) I wouldn't be to quick to remove the lower right branch, it really gives the tree good balance. It is just a little high in its placement on the trunk right now. If it is flexable enough it should be wired down to the level of the trunks bend so it appears to emanate from near that point. Then I would work to refine the foliage pads and repot it when it is ready. In addition the trunk could have some shari added to it that would enhance the story of struggle that this tree depicts.

just another point of view,

Bob O

Glenn:

Here is what I had in mind as a goal for the tree. Please excuse the quality of the shot as all I have to work with is MS Paint.

If it were possible to shorten the trunk I think the proportions of the tree are greatly improved. However this might be tricky indeed.
