You have done a superb job with it for 5 years from a cutting. It has good taper and great branch placement. A few finer things I would focus on. Like for example wiring the foliage up, and cutting away the hangers. You got the start on some good pads, now in your next growing season you can focus on wiring them up, and pinching them back into nice tight pads.

I can't see the detail in your nebari, but looks like some work there, defining your nebari a little bit more, and maybe with a repot, working on the soil surface as a whole. Dress it up nice and get it ready for show.

By hangers I mean the fingers of foliage that hang down or grow on the bottom of the branches in a downward fashion. In good pad formation on juniper bonsai, the foliage grows from the branches horizonally or upwards. In fact you will often see a thourough wriring on junipers, where every tip of every branch is wired into place, and all the tertiary branches grow off the horizontal, or from the top of the branches. The artist will then come back, and snip anything that naturally hangs down, or grows from the underside of the branches.

Note the tree in this link, how neat it's foliage is, no hangers:

Looks good, I like it. I would use wire to put some movement into the straight middle section of the trunk. This would give you a tree that is shorter, fuller, and perhaps more interesting/older looking. Keep in mind I've only been doing bonsai for a couple years- I'm sure the pros will have something more to say.

I'm just wondering if anyone else would have considered this a FORMAL upright? I realize theres a little more movement than normal in the lower section, but its styling as a whole is much more formal. Just noticing.

Too much movement to be a "formal" and I think the "informal" look is better anyolway.

Further...me thinks it would be good to lose about 25% of the height...devellop a rounded apex...and have the lower branches "droop" a bit. This would all contribute to a look of age.

Nice tree...

My thoughts...
