Juniper front and potting angle

This is a juniper that I bought, pruned and styled last year. I looked at it a couple of days ago and did not like what I saw. The second pic is the original front, but I think I may like the first pic better. I also was thinking about changing the potting angle to make it something like this in teh drawing. Maybe eventually put it into a crescent pot beacus the movement seems like it would match the half moon shape.

I don't think this juniper is going to live through any more styling work. It looks root bound in tightly packed garden soil and seriously stressed out.

Yes it is root bound, I wasnt planning to do any styling till the end of the summer, just a repot in a couple of weeks. But maybe Ill wait untill next year to do the styling. Is that the reason why the foliage is not green. Its not dried out or anything, but just hasn't turned green, I thougt its beacuse of the funky weather her in NJ.

Well it is hard to tell from your photo what is really going on with it, it could be simple winter color or it could be damage. I have seen them go a dark plum, bronze and brown in winter season like yours. I think teasing out about half of the root ball and planting into fresh soil then waiting to see how it responds is the right move here.

What exact species are you working with here?
