juniper cascade

his is one of my cascades that I am working on. I repotted it last spring and let it grow to gain strength back. This spring I will go in and thin out and get the foliage pads back into shape(lord knows it needs it). Comments are greatly appreciated good or bad. Oh this cascade is about 22"

Re: juniper cascade

John,
The juniper cascade looks great to me the way it is. A little pinching here and there to tune it up but personally I prefer a somewhat wild and natural appearance. While finely manicured bonsai are indeed impressive, they sometimes lack the life and movement that is obvious in your juniper. I can readily imagine this tree perched on some wilderness cliff at much larger scale. These are just my novice opinions, however, so I'll be waiting to see what the experts think. Welcome to the board, nice tree......Mike

Re: juniper cascade

John,
Great piece of stock to work on. I know You already know what to do by reading your post. Is this a current photo?
The things you mentioned are important. Sometimes a rest period to gain strength is needed. I have found that with Jun. Chin, Pro-nana, If you let each little branchlet get long the strength goes to the tip and the undergrowth turns from a green trunk to a brown branch. Then it will shed old needles. Then you have a mess!
That is why continued pinching is the only way to keep them in shape.
Rather that wait for the spring bud elongation you might consider a pinch back now. You will still get a spring flush of growth but it will be later and tighter.
You might benefit also by defining the pads in the crown, and bringing all pads into a horizontal position. Then pinch back all growth hanging under branches.
I have a feeling this was your plan any way right?

Re: juniper cascade

Greetings all,
I had to root prune alot to get it into this pot last spring and I was kinda afraid to work on it to much. I pinched alittle through the summer but I probably could of pinched more but I figured I would be safe then sorry. I did do a fall pinching and alittle pruning but forgot to take pics(have a bad habit of that ) This cascade has really grown well this year I was worried cause I root pruned so much but thank God it strenthened up. Here is another cascade I styled this year from nursery stock. It needs to fill out more. I keep staring at it to see if I should maybe shorten it up,(what do you think?)
