Can you re-post with better pics against a plain background? Virtuals are very difficult with so much confusing background information.

The obvious choice for the Juni is a Bunjin, although it appears to suffer from bad negative taper.

Send a message via Yahoo to zen
You can fix the inverse taper by carving some jins and shari the trunk so that you can carve it to a smaller diamter, this would coincide with the bunjin or literati look and could add some focal points to the composition.

Reverse taper is sometimes "Good and/or OK" in bunjins, nothing wrong with being different once in awhile and as Zen brings the point up some carving later on will take care of it if it bothers the owner.

I think I like the possibles of the juniper.I have avoided bloodgoods ,I hear they aren't so great for making bonsais. What do we think?

Sure!

I was expecting this "challenge".After work tonight I will contact the owners of the trees and get permission to post them. For the Chinese made stuff I will just have to use links due to the language barrier.

Good stuff.

wes,
Heres a fall shot from October of one of FOUR big, collected "Bloodgoods" I've been woorking on a couple years. A few more years to go. Size of boards behind tree are 8" across.
The other three are shorter, bigger trunks but not worked as low into pots yet. Sorry , no other pics.
BTW, as with all maples, large cuts heal great! and I treat cuts with putty-type sealer.
Dale

Nice maple.I had read they were no good as they have problems as bonsais so I have been passing them up from the landscaping stores. Thanks for the pic.

For now....Just going to the gallery here and searching "bunjin" one of the first trees pulled up was a Japnese black pine with some reverse action, good looking tree.Seems I see a nice broadleafed species in TOD with the reverse bunjin moves.Bonsaitalk home page is featuring a bunjin with reverse aswell.

Bloodgood aren't the best cultivar for bonsai. They are cheap and readily available though. They tend towards long shoots with long internodes. They can also burn in summer sun and some have significant root issues.

This doesn't mean they can't be worked into decent bonsai. Just takes a little extra effort. I sold mine off a while ago. Too much trouble trying to ramify it. I got twice as much return for the same effort with other acer palmatum cultivars.

My initial Bloodgood starting material were two, $12, 1.5" diameter plants from K-Mart. Both had very nice nebari--once you hacked off the "arial" roots growing all up and down th e first third of the trunks. Those roots came from improper potting by K-Mart's growers.

I eventually sold them off for $30 each. Not a bad return for five years work.

Can't find any JBP in the Gallery with reverse taper?? I'm intrigued to see a tree that looks good with it....I've always seen it as desireable as Vine Weevel.
