Juniper
The photo of this procumbens (18"H to tip of deadwood) was taken 02/16/02. Since then, the foliage has filled in a lot and it will be left to grow for a season. I've been trying to decide what to do with the deadwood. Bend it? Lose it? I know with wet heat, it can be bent to just about any position. Any suggestions out there? Thanks

Re: Juniper
I would try bending it and if that doesn't work out well, then you can always cut it off.
Soak the deadwood in rags that you keep wet for a couple weeks to let the moisture penetrate. Then wrap the deadwood in tinfoil and heat it with a butane torch You should be able to get it to spiral up in an interesting way. I found some interesting links re: Deadwood styling and added them to bonsaiTALK Links in techniques->deadwood

Re: Juniper
I must say you're tree is wonderful!
If you follow Matt's instructions and bend the deadwood, it will become one of the most pleasing trees I've ever seen. I wish I'll achieve the stage of your skills someday. |

Re: Juniper
I agree with Zeb...that is a very nice tree.
One of the little tid bits I picked up about deadwood is that jinned branches, to look convincing, have to be going in the same direction or shape that a branch would be if it were alive. If a branch or branches wouldn't fit if it had foilage on it, it won't fit jinned. Either way, you've got a great tree. Wish it were mine. Earl |
