Joanie's Mames
Sorry for my name in the title... but this way I will be able to find it when I want to update the pictures!
Here are a few of my mame that have been styled from nursery stock. Most have only had a minimum of styling, and almost no wiring, as they had a lot of root pruning and I wanted them to get established in their smaller homes before doing more stressful work. I'll do a post for each one, so that I can update later... critique is welcome, but remember that these are early stages for the little guys. Joanie |

The largest is the pomegranate... about 5" tall. Pot by Jim Barrett, but not it's final pot. It bloomed this spring, and now has been trimmed and wired. A minimal shari is being carved where there was previous damage. "Punica granatum nana". The apex that it will be developing will come more toward the viewer, I am waiting for a bud break where it would be more advantageous.

Next in size is the boxwood with the funny "arm". It was a whim, actually, I was given the little guy to work on during our Spring Show, out in the booth where we demo all day. It had one looooong branch. Without the branch, it had no character, but obviously the branch was much too long. And cutting the foliage area off would kill the branch (typical for boxwoods) So I wired it and bent the branch into an elbow. My inspiration was a buttonwood style, and in person (where the depth can be seen) it is quite a bit more effective. When I get some backbudding on the branch it may be shortened, but then again it may not. Smaller trees, like this one, can be forgiven their eccentricities more than larger trees can. Height about 5".
Pot by Walsall Studios, but not its final pot. Roots need more reduction. |

This is the little olive. About 3" tall. Some shaping has been done, entirely by the cut and grow method. Root reduction will continue. This little guy was in a very large pot and had an extensive root system when purchased at the Spring show.
Pot by Dick Ryerson, but not the final choice. Lovely pot, however. |

Another boxwood, this one is about 4" tall. Strange trunk but somehow it works for now. Much more styling is needed, and I want to sweep the apex back in a flowing opposition to the slant. "Kingsville" I believe.
Pot by Walsall Studios. |

This little lonicera nitida is one of my favorites. It hasn't had as much trimming as it needs, but I am cautious with the little guys. It made its debut at the SDBC Spring show, in a case with other mame. You can see the new bright growth since then. Lots of thinning needs to be done. A little less than 3" tall.
Pot by Walsall Studios, and it may be the final one. |

This little burst of chaos in a pot is also a lonicera nitida, about 3" tall. It had very extensive root pruning (like, 70 percent) a month ago and is now really hitting its stride again. No pruning has been done except for the longest branches.
Pot by unknown potter. Last edited by Joanie : 11-Jul-2006 at 05:23 PM. |

The third lonicera nitida, also about 3". Some top work has been done. I should have rotated the tree a little so that the back branch was not in contrast to the trunk quite as it seems. Pot is Chinese I think, not the final pot.

While not actually a bonsai, these accent plants give great pleasure. This is some sort of little succulent thing, and a burst of sedum. Pot by Jim Barrett. The quarter for scale.
This has been planted for about four months and is thriving. |

When I received this lovely soft blue/green pot from Walsall, I wondered what would go into it. Along comes a grass of exactly the same color! A little over 3" tall.
