Big Smile To Jin Or Not To Jin My Juniper

I bought this Procumbens Nana on eBay about a month ago. I would like to ad jin to the trunk of the tree but I'm not sure if I should. I'd hate to screw up this beautiful tree. If anyone has any ideas for a virtual please let me know.

Good bones, but it needs refinement.

1) Cut the last 4" or so off each of those three or four long branches will be a good start

2) Identify and encourage the development of secondary branching which will ultimately replace the last 4-6 inches of each branch

3) that vertically upward backward facing branch is confusing. It would be nice to see a side view so we can see more clearly where it comes from and where it goes. You need back branching but this one looks really odd.

Regards,

Matt

I messed around with a virtual for you. I tightened some of the pads and moved the main trunk a little left and tightened a few of the spaces up. Just some routine maintenence will "spruce" this juniper right up.

I think pdbonsai is on the right track with this tree. But I would make the left lower side of the apex crown come down further, but still leaving negative space. I think your lower left branch needs to lose that arch coming from the trunk now, before it gets too thick to work with.

I'll answer your question with a question about the jin/shari. Does this tree strike you as environmentally challenged? Thats to say. Do you look at this tree and it speaks to you saying, "mother nature has been a real b**ch to me!" I personally don't see that when I look at it (atleast thats what I see from this picture). So my opinion would be that jin/shari techniques should be used minimally to cover mistakes and scars.
Just my dos pesos.
