JH Elm - Sick Or Frozen?

This Jacqueline Hillier Elm was chopped earlier in the spring - prior to bud break. The new lead was wired up at that time. A week ago, I had new leaves sprouting all over, up and down. We had a spell of unusually cold weather, one night of which went down to freezing. It didn't appear, at first to have hurt anything, but then one night I went to bed and all was fine....next morning I found what you see here. Crispy brown leaves. No spots, no yellowing, no slowly curling and dying....just overnight from green to brown. Any ideas? It had been exceptionally rainy as well - so I was fearing root problems; but there are still buds breaking and new leaves in other areas as you can see. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ohio is fun at this time of year. Frost last week. 36 on Monday this week. 85 this coming Saturday......

Most likely the frost killed off some of those young leaves if you did not have the tree protected. If you still have buds swelling then the tree is doing just great.

Yeah - I'm REALLY considering moving south! I'm thinking Knoxville should be far enough south that I can still get good fall color, trees will go dormant, I'd have more than a 3 month growing season...

Thanks - actually, I'm hoping it was the cold - I just thought these trees were a little more cold resistant. I'll just keep an eye on it.
