this new angle makes the tree taller and i can't see how i can use the existing apex and make a good tree of it. not enough girth down low for that height in my opinion. these are a couple of new apex possabilities which will also create varying trunk lines.

what do you guys think, am i overlooking something? there is also a semi cascade tree and a shohin air layer in this, just dont know that i want to go down that road with it.

I've got a sacrifice branch on 8-9yr old black pine I just got and was hoping for some clarification.

On sacrifice branches you recommend pulling all old needles and only letting new years growth on the branch. Could you comment further on how this works? I'm assuming that the usual method of pulling new and leaving old/weak growth promotes back budding and smaller needles while leaving only new growth promotes further growth on the sacrifice branch and thickens up the trunk quicker than the prior usual method of refinement.

On the sacrifice branch, should there be any chandle reduction and/or bud reduction or just let it grow wild? Or is there a happy balance in orded not to produce an unslightly knob (unless desired to be jinned of course). Any elaboration would be appreciated. (or if you've mentioned it before feel free to link me to a thread).

Typically one will be trying to grow "real branches" near the base at the same time that the sacrifice leader and/or branches are growing. Reduce the number of candles on the sacrifice leader and branches to one and pluck all needles off of it except those at the site of the growing candle (looks like a lions tail wih a candle on the end). Take off all additiona growth except for the one candle. This prevents the sacrifice from shading out your "real" branches that you do candle and needle reduction on to keep from over growing. The rapidly grwing sacrifice branch/leader won't bud back too much because you are leaving the terminal candle which continues to limit back budding.

As has been suggested elswhere on this forum, I think BonsaiKC brought it up most recently, be careful with sacrifice branches- it takes years to get them healed over and the bark right. You are better off to grow a tall sacrifice leader, develop the tree underneath it, then when you cut it off it will be at the back where you won't see it. Takes some planning.

this is the preliminary, im still making decisions. the first is hiro's front. the second mine. i see a naughty tree who wants to break the rules. that second branch growing forward is calling me to chop it back to its first secondary that is crossin the trunk. and that sets the theme for the rest. i like the idea of the new apex turning to the direction it came from. any comments, opinions and virt,s woul be much appreciated.

question is it possible to farther prune at decandling time mid december or must strictly only take off new growth for second flush

Looking real good, Antonio...I wouldn't have recognized the tree if it had been in a different post. I will let others with more JBP experience answer your queston on pruning. BY the way, I like Hiro's front the best.
