Well, it's getting too late in the season to do any major work here on pines, but wanted to squeeze this one in. Pretty self explanatory, open to pointers as well. Will be doing the wiring later today, and will post follow up.

Hi Scott,

It's nice to have the process so well documented by photographs - that makes it easy to comment. I could go on and on about repotting, but I'll keep it to what I see as the three most important pointers here.

1) Never bare root a black pine - that is much too stressful on the tree. Work in stages instead. Take out part of the old soil this year, more at the next repot.

2) Don't wire a newly repotted tree unless you're only doing the smallest of detail wiring. This stresses the tree further (remember, your pine just went through a bare-rooting!!) and more importantly, the act of wiring creates enough leverage to further moves and damage the fine feeder roots, since they haven't had a chance to get established in the new pot. If you're going to both wire and repot at the same time, then wire first, repot second.

3) It is hard, if not impossible, to securely tie down a tree of this size with one wire. If it goes on one side of the trunk, there is always one direction in which the trunk can rock. Use two wires, so that you can anchor on both sides of the trunk.

Best regards,
Carl

Carl,
I agree with you on the bare rooting, on a healthy tree....this one had been staying too wet, and needed to get out of the soil it was in. There was none of that healthy fungus present, and I needed to get it into a dryer mix. As for the tying down with 2 wires, I should have. I am still planning on more wiring than this, but will be done closer to the fall, where a guy wire will be pulling down an upper thick part of the trunk. Right now I have to get it through the stress it's been through. It's resting quietly on the table, no sun, and overcast skies. Thanks for the pointers

Hey Scott, Don't forget to keep it sheltered from the rain.

Delboy.

Delboy,
Thanks, its under cover as we speak, resting quietly. Also sheltered from any wind.

Just an update on this one, took some pics in Sept 06, and came across them this morning-will be doing some work on this soon enough. It has done everything I had hoped, lots of new growth, and will get major re-do, that's all I can say now. Will post pics in March.

It looks good, Scott. I'll offer up my two cents. I have always bare-rooted my JBP when I repotted them, provided that they are healthy and vigorous. My three biggest trees have trunks between 2 and 3 inches. I only have a handful of trees, so I haven't done this more than a few times. None of them have ever shown the slightest signs of distress. The other thing I would mention is that if you want much growth, you might want to have the tree in a bigger pot.
Take care,
zube
