I bought this JBP 2 years ago at a box garden store and I didn't do much to it. Last year, I played with the candles to see what would happened. This year, I re-potted it from a 1 gallon cramped plastic pot to this blue grow basin because I was worried it would weaken or die. What would you do with it? Thanks for the input!

The lower branches are pretty weak. Even if they won't be used in the final design you're going to want to keep them around awhile to thicken the trunk proportionaltely to get taper. If you let the top run away it will get thicker, but without taper.
So, If it is established and healthy in the current pot, I would snap those 5-6 candles at the top in half to redirect some energy to the lower branches. You need to think about where you want to be with this tree. Some people might say cut it way back. Others would say to put it in the ground. A lot will depend on the height and caliper you envision for the final product. It's pretty straight between the weak midlevel branches and the worl about 2/3 of the way up. Regards, Matt

Lesley,
What is it that you want to achieve with this tree? This is what I ask myself with whatever tree I look at. Too me this tree needs to be thickened up, grown on for another 5 years in the ground or grow box. If you want to develop it now then I don't see anything else than a mini tree in this material. I have attached a picture of where I would chop it to start work on a mini right now if that is your choice. The reason I don't suggest a taller tree and using the existing trunk or long right hand side branch is because they are straight and uninteresting. There is not much secondary branching on the main trunk or secondary trunk that I can see. By chopping where I have indicated you could either attempt a mini or plant in the ground to fatten the trunk up. Not only will you already have low sacrifice branches to fatten the trunk up further but also will be able to develop some more movement in the trunk by planting the tree at an angle and allowing the new apex to grow. Sorry Lesley if I have been negative in this post and hope you don't think it is an attack on you. I am just voicing my opinion on what I would do to this tree if it were mine.
