Japanese White pine

I asked the question a few weeks ago about the pruning of pines, which was answered. Thankyou. Now I am posting a photo of my Japanese white pine for any feedback and suggestions for the future. It was field grown, grafted on to black pine. I have only had it about 1 month and have styled it and potted it into the container.

cheers

Re: Japanese White pine

Hey Ant, congrats on the nice new tree!
Here are a few of my observations...please keep in mind this is just what I would do, not by any means the only way, or even perhaps the best way. Just my ideas. Here goes...
First i'm not convinced with the pot. Perhaps something rectangular with stronger lines to compliment the powerful nature of these pines. I also think this one's a touch to large.
Next, i would not plant the tree so far off to the side. It should not be completely symetrical, but to my eye this is off balanced.
Next I would remove the current apex and replace it with one of the two branches next to it. I cannot tell from the photo which of the two would be best, but for a tree with this height/trunk ratio, i think it could be a little shorter. This is of course a matter of opinion.
Lastly, while shaping the tree, try to point the candles upwards so that the needles point above the branch.
Overall you have a wonderful tree here with lots of potential. Good luck, and have fun with it.

With the available branches, this is one possibility.

Re: Japanese White pine

Greetings,

A suggested virtual is below. Urb is right on the money.

The apex is a bit too tall given the thickness of the tree. A lower branch could be turned up to form the new top.

The pot is too large and planting position is too far to one side, but the offcenter planting made it easy to correct in this virtual. I don't mind the shape of the container, the White Pine is the "feminine" pine, but it's just too large.

The wiring would be correct for a Japanese Black Pine, but the White Pine does not have the strength to force its new candles out and upward at 90 degrees, so always be sure to turn the terminal buds upward, especially on the weaker inner and lower branches.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. I like what David has done too., though. BTW, doesn't his virtual look frighteningly like his user icon?

Matt,

It must have been subliminal suggestion.

Re: Japanese White pine

Someday, I would love an on-line class on virtuals. I have the idea but not the specifics. Anyway, I created this rough virtual before I saw Matt's much better one. I guess we are all on the same track.

Re: Japanese White pine

Thanks for the advice and virtuals. I had not noticed how off centre the tree was or that the pot was too large until you pointed it out. Now that you have it is obvious. as for the styling, I had similar visions as Matt, Urb & Earl for the Apex but thought I would live with it for a bit before I made too many changes. Now I have seen the virtuals I think it is the way to go.

Thanks
