When they start to fall on their own is a good indication of ripeness.

IMHO Gary, That's not a great spot. You lose all the benefit of the sinuous, correcting movement in the trunk and wind up with a short, motionless stump. J. Maples are all about feminine movement.

Regards,

Matt

Heres an update:

It started to warm up down here so I decided to go collect the red maple. There had been alot of rain lately so the area containing the rms was flooded with about 1.5 feet of water. After I collected the maple I headed back to the truck with only my tools because carrying both would have been impossible. I was being bitten by tons of mosquitos so I took the path straight through the swamp. About half way through I heard a splash ahead of me. 7 feet in front of me was a cotton mouth about 3 feet long coiled in a tight little bun with its mouth open so wide all that I could see was white. I slowly turned around and decided the mosquitos weren't so bad after all so I took the long way around. Needless to say, after I put my tools in the truck I went back and got my tree. To and fro from the dig site, every little russel or splash made me almost poo in my pants.

Anyway, heres the tree I almost died for, I'll probably cut it again just underneath the upper left branch.

Scary stuff! I think a well done is required!

As for the novice air layer - As long as it gets the job done!

Regards Jonny.
