Japanese Maple

This is a Japanese Maple Katsura that I would like to get some feedback on as far branch selection. Which to keep or lose? The tree is 14in tall and very nice in leaf.

Re: Japanese Maple

Here is a virtual to challenge your notions of what a maple could be. Personally, I find too often that bonsai don't reflect the form of the species.

You can reasonably style a maple in the form of another tree, but it is a deciduous tree, and it can look especially magnificent if it has soft curves with branches that rise gracefully as opposed to branching out in a horizontal way as a pine would be prone to do.

Please keep in mind that this is a suggestion and may be completely inappropriate for this tree given its state of development. I just thought it would be interesting to see it starting from a "blank slate" Maybe one reason you like it so much in leaf is that it has a nice silhouette. I think if it had a very nice branch structure, it could be a great tree year round.

Regards,

Matt

Matt
I found your virtual very interesting, but I'm not sure I can
do a total branch restructure. I waited some time before replying to let the leaves grow out some to show everyone
why I like this tree so much. It may not win any prizes but
it is one of my favorites. I thank you for your input. Happy growing.

Re: Japanese Maple

I really like that tree, and although I am not very familiar with the natural look of a Japanese Maple, I would recommend making the top more 'pointy' - it seems too flat.

Just a suggestion

Re: Japanese Maple

Nice foliage. I borrowed some of them to see how the virtual might look.

Matt

Re: Japanese Maple

Hi,

It is a lovely tree but I'm with Matt here. The tree looks much more "natural" in his virtual. I'm sure Walter would agree ( ) If it was mine, I would try to follow this image.

regards, René

Re: Japanese Maple

I agree with Matt. however if you didn't want to totally resyle it I think it's a little top heavy.

Re: Japanese Maple

I agree with Matt. However if you didn't want to totally restyle the tree I would make it less top heavy buy rounding out the form a little. This is my first virtual so.........

Re: Japanese Maple

Thanks Matt, I don't like the knot hole either. Plus I made the tree a little too rounded. I'll try again when I have a little time!
