Japanese Holly
And here's the holly,...also thanks to Wayne for this peice of stock.
Thinking of going with a clump style on this peice, with probably only three trunks, heck it might be a twin trunk,....who knows it might just look best with only one trunk. I'll have to do some virtin' on it in photoshop. If anybody has any ideas what so ever as to styling options, fill me in, I am more than willing to consider more avenues before cutting on this one.

Zen...
I saw your question on Mike's "Problem Oak" thread... I have to confess I was pondering this tree last night and wondered the same thing. There's just so much going on with this tree... and if you remove some of the trunks you risk it looking very odd indeed compared to that base... At best it would be cool to try and see if there is a good place to split it. Alternatives may be to choose a trunk to be the living part of the tree, and see if you can't carve the rest into some kind of pleasing asthetic. You can strip the bark and still wire it into shape... if it's a hard bend you may want to wrap/bar/wrap/wire the trunks (just to keep them from breaking) and move them. They'll take the new position when they dry out. Challenging yes... but not impossible. In anycase... it will be a good tree to learn on. Kindest Regards, Victrinia |

Zen,
Very nice piece of stock, I want to see it out of the pot if possible.

A sumo maybe.
Zen, it's tough to tell from the pix, but in the 3rd picture, it looks like if you cut off the rear"trunks" you would have a nice fat squat sumo, just need to work the top of it.
Then again that's from looking at the pix, I have been known to not see thru those real well. It looks like a ton of taper up to a couple of leaders (loose one) and if the rear half is removable you have a pretty nice trunk to work with. Then there was the recent thread ( can't remember who) where the saws all was used to make something similar into 2 trees. ( maybe mike P). Last edited by Mcspeed : 23-Feb-2007 at 06:51 PM. Here are my ideas Zen. I would propose Walter Pall's "naturalistic boxwood" style. Anyway, these are just my ideas. (but what does a 14 year old kid with 3 years of experience know?) It would have two dominant trunks (in the center) and two sub-dominant trunks (on either side).
best of luck, bonsaimeister

Zen,
I'm inexperienced with pruning, but how does this look to you?

Ms. Vic, I don't know if I'm a "rules maven", because I plead guilty to doing it "my way" many times. That being said, crossed trunks rarely looks right. You're an artist. You know that rules don't make art. Art makes rules. Best Regards Mike
