Japenese Hawthorn Styling
just bought this japanese hawthorn (thats what we think it is anyway) The leaves are on the large side and the fruit for a hawthorn ,however due to the nice snake like shape of the lower trunk i intent to air layer it to get two trees,,,,,when is the best time to do this Spring or autumn? and is it true Hawthorn hates root reduction ? (nice shape trunk though )
any other styling ideas , all virtuals greatfully recieved,,,,,,, DANGER!!!!!!!!!!,unsure artist at work |

PT,
The top half looks to have more potential than the bottom to me. reason: The bottom looks too much like the unnatural B&Qsai with the twisty trunk. (not my cuppa ) The top looks to have a more natural movement to it, and may perhaps be even better if the layer was 2" higher up. just my tuppence ha'penny... Regards,

also, perhaps if you could wire the first branch on the top half down quite a bit, almost below horizontal, it might enhance the overall look of the top bit.

Hi PT, finally got round to a virtual
Although they're not my cuppa really, I think the bankan could look quite good with a swept back pad/canopy, moving to the left. Also, as you say the leaves are rather big, the may not reduce down to the size in the virt... It might take a few years to get the extension growth to acheive this, but that's what it's all about isn't it... Regards, TB
