Japanese Gray Balk Elm?
I was wondering if you all think this is a japanese gray balk elm? I bought this little tree about a year ago, I think it has potential to be a beautiful tree don't ya think? it is approximately 5 years old but I didnt ask what type of tree it was when i bought it. Im pritty sure its a japanese gray balk elm but any opinions are welcomed, any idea's?

Hi bonsai_girl,
this clearly is a Zelkova serrata, whatever else you want to call it in any language. In English it is usually referred to as Zelkova. It is part of the elm family. It is indeed a nice tree with high potentiyl for the long run. best regards Walter Pall |

It definitely looks like a Zelkova (Japanese Gray Bark elm). Some advice for you is to keep trimming and pinching new growth as Zelkova tend to have die back on inner branches alot. I have found this to be the case down here in Melbourne. Looks to be a nice broom style tree you will have there. David |
