Japanese Black Pine Cascade

Now it is my turn to ask for some help in the design of this black pine into a cascade. I haven't tried a cascade before and thankful here the trunk has already been grown for me. I would like ideas and possiblly virtuals with the folage on the pine. It was recently pinched back and thats why there isn't too much folage on the tree. Picked this up from a wholesaler for AUS$150 ~ US$80 a while ago now.

Would appreciate help in how the folage should look and sit. Pot ideas would be welcome but I have a few already in mind. Current pot if only for growing on quicker.

Thanks

David

David:

I wish I could help you, but this tree is already looking too good for me to help. I would leave it like that and enjoy it, but I know that other members might help.

I really would like to help you, since you were really helpful with my black pine...

Anyway, great tree...

This is looking FINE! I think it just needs some time.

All I will say is to favor the apex (tip) at the expense of the crown. Select the strongest buds down there and keep it going. Thin the crown if it gets dense so you can get plenty of light in.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Jose. The tree needs help at the top part of the cascade. I don't know if it needs to have an apex or what. The shape and movement are good but the top part of the cascade needs work.

My main issue is the crown. I hope get a digi camera soon so I can show you what I when. I'm not sure how the crown should look. I like the apex as is. My previous post I wrongly described the crown as they apex. Silly me.

Thanks Matt

Hi david,

I think Matt's right. Don't change anything. It's looking just fine like it is. Congratulations on your buy ! $80 sound like a good price to me.

Refining the japanese black pine

There is nothing that I see wrong with the form and trunk line of this pine and I feel that you should work on ramification and pad structures. With the basics in place it will be more, years of refining bud selection and needle reduction while keeping this tree healthy. This looks like an exelent purchase and can end up being a wonderful show tree.

Thumbs up

I too, don't think you should change a thing. With a year or two of growing it should fill in nicely and look even better.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I was just paranoid about the look of a cascade and getting it right. I'll keep at it this year and see how I go developing the folage pads.

Thank you everyone.
